Maine Event: Day 27

We had a lovely day today taking the ferry to Cliff Island in Casco Bay. The ferry and the islands are a great addition to the city of Portland and in many ways are totally different in vibe. If you remember Peaks Island is only 15 minutes away via ferry and has a single year-round restaurant and market and a few seasonal things like a bike rental, a bakery, and other things of this sort. It has about 1000 year-round residents and significantly more people in the summer. Cliff Island is about a one-hour ferry ride away with several stops at other islands on the way. Sixty people live on Cliff Island year-round and during the summer that number reaches 200. There is one store that stocks a few staples (no fresh vegetables or fruit) and a café next door. The cafe is closing this week and the store is closing next week for the season. Cliff island has all dirt roads and is an interesting shape. In the map below it is all the way to the right. Great Chebeague also has an old fancy old course and here is another link from the Island Journal on the local golf scene.

You can kind of see the faint line of where the ferry drops you off on Cliff Island and we went out to the skinny handle and then back and towards the North East on the map (so up). This delicious Cliff Island, Maine boat was found on this walk far from water.

These lobster cages are so decorative. They go several rows deep also. I don't think they have seen much use recently as they have plants growing through them.

The views are spectacular walking along little dirt roads.

The sea grass is different here but no less beautiful. The little rock island is covered with birds.

Even on the far away islands there are apple trees here and there.

We have been told that Lobster is better in Rockland so perhaps there will be a trip to find lobster in Rockland ($34 each seems expensive).
