Maine Event: Day 37

A storm is moving in and today we have great mounds of grey clouds with grey clouds behind them. It was also warm with a low of 61° and a high of 72°. Friday and Saturday we will have rain but it doesn't seem like it will get cold again for a bit. This evening we had a nice walk and while the sun went down the clouds decided to drizzle. It happens so easily here. It's kind of wonderful!

I went to the farmers market at 7 am this morning (I love that it is open at 7 am and it is all set up and ready earlier) and it was pretty quiet and the produce was glorious. I even got a few french prune plums. I'm considering if I can make a free-form tart in the broiler pan with my small basket of plums. There were significantly fewer people which made shopping much nicer. Gorgeous vegetables and the farmers are sincere when they thank you. I really like the people of Maine. There is a grounded authenticity that I find refreshing. Also, they sell iceberg lettuce alongside the other varieties and not because it is cool. I'm pretty sure it just never went out of style.

Also, the prices have come down as the season is changing and they are looking to move more of the harvest. I heard that the tomatoes aren't as good this year and I'm guessing it is because they had a super rainy cool July.

We went and looked at lobsters thinking we could get some for not too expensive and cook them at home and then looked at each other and laughed. No pot in this house is large enough to cook a beast that large. We will think about other options.

It's beginning to look like fall in Portland Maine.

On the way to the garden, we caught the drawbridge up. You cannot imagine what this is like. It is so incredibly huge and heavy concrete. It's as if the new Bay Bridge opened up, it's concrete with a pedestrian/bike path. And when it opens and closes a super-loud siren goes off.

Another lush view of the garden. I never get tired of food growing. It is just so beautiful.

New York asters grow everywhere here brightening life. They were three inches tall at the Owls Head State Beach and they are more than three feet tall here at the edge of the garden.

On the first day of fall, there are the beginnings of color...

The change of the season is profound (and wonderful) and even though it was warm today it is not 88° like it was in August. Go see some nature and enjoy the colors whatever they are.
