Maine Event: Day 41

Today was our island day and we took a ferry out to Long Island and went on a 10-mile walk. Long Island is one of the islands in Casco Bay although it seceded from Portland some years ago. It is extraordinarily beautiful and is a bit more working-class than Peaks. We even spotted a pair of bald eagles playing on the trip out. Also, I discovered a good-looking fish store in downtown Portland that I will go to later this week. YAY! 

Long Island, Maine is both quirky and gorgeous. Hopefully, the pictures show that. This is mostly a picture day so sit back and enjoy.

This is the Wabanaki ferry which was a brand new state of the art ferry in 2014. It is not a car ferry - it doesn't go to Peaks Island - but rather to the other islands. It is patiently waiting to take us to Long Island (it makes several different stops along the way) and continues beyond Long Island to Cliff Island.

These boats are for Fogg's water taxi service. They will take you wherever you want to go much faster than the ferry and when the ferry is not running. They aren't cheap, but in a pinch they are useful.

This is one of the ferry stops at Great Diamond on the way to Long Island. This island has golf courses and weddings and other such things.

We arrived at Long Island just before 2 in the afternoon (it takes about an hour to reach there) and made our way to a little restaurant that closed at 2pm and got chocolate chip cookies and sat on their deck overlooking the bay. Then we started walking around the sweet little roads and what did we come upon but an apple tree.

This yard was filled with colorful "stuff" this was the section of plastic pelicans and other birds. Did I mention quirky?

We made it to our first beach. Quite a parking lot. We arrived here just as it started to rain. It rained hard for 5 minutes and then stopped and got sunny. You could see it raining on the next island over.

Lovely white sand beach with the green ocean. Out on the islands you even sometimes get waves and ocean spray.

These little houses at the end of the beach are nestled at the end of a little spit and then rocks and an almost island except it is connected to the land. Two perfect modern wooden houses at the end of the world.

On our walk to the next beach, we spotted Miss Piggy the golf cart.

This sweet little road led to the next beach provided shade some respite from the heat after the rain the humidity was high and not a whisper of wind.

There are so many birds here. We reached our second beach.

This is the end of the beach and the direction the binoculars were pointing.

As we were walking along we spotted this chimney-like object that we cannot figure out what is it. It is larger and taller than a normal chimney and has no remnants of a house around it. It has a hole near the bottom. It looks like the top is capped. We couldn't get close because it is guarded with poison ivy (which looks suspiciously like poison oak only different - it gleams the same way). Do you know what it could be? Any guesses?

The thing is on an island all roads lead to the sea pretty much and gorgeous views are free for the taking. Uninterrupted by anything.

This gas pump is solitary and decrepit but still works. Gas is $ 4.45/gallon and you need to remember the number of gallons to tell the cashier to pay. It smells of gasoline. Island life.

There were more monarch butterflies than people on the island.

Yay! the ferry boat is coming to take us back around 4:40 pm or so. There is another one in 1/2 hour and then none until 7:30 pm!
