Maine Event: Day 54

Happy Saturday! We decided this morning we would go downtown to shop at two stores I've been eyeing, the first is a really good spice store called Skordo. The second is a Swedish clothing and tchotchke store. It was a grand adventure and I'm pleased to find Kashmir Pepper, Porcini Powder, and Pink Peppercorns.

Then in the late afternoon, we met up with our dear friends Dorothy and Alec who came up for a visit and walked down to the ferry terminal, and then we were whisked away on the Machigonne II to Peaks Island. As you probably remember it is the closest island with a dedicated ferry. (The other islands share a ferry that makes stops at several islands.) Upon arrival, we walked around to the back side of the island where you can see the open ocean, and gazed upon the cloud show. Then we walked back and had 24-hour fermented wood-fired pizza at Il Leone. Then we went on another walk in the twilight to see the sunset over the ocean. The nice thing about being on a relatively small island, the ocean is never far.

We took the ferry back which only takes 15-20 minutes and then walked back up another 15 minutes to where we are staying. It is just so civilized and close to the ocean. Quite a treat to have West Coast friends who moved home to the East Coast come and visit us in Portland. Overall a perfect day. I wish you were here.

As usual, we went to the garden to drop off our compost. And who winked at me today is this beautiful chartreuse flowering dill plant.

Even a brontosaurus dinosaur was out on the island today to enjoy the view.

We had such a good time. Lovely to spend time with such good people.

In the twilight, the ray of light from the lighthouse provided a flash of humanity on this quiet dark island. Although there are about 2,000 people that live on Peaks there are no street lights and by 6:30 pm everyone was tucked inside their homes. The sound of the ocean is wonderful here.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend.
