ME II: travel & heat

This morning we got up early and wrapped up our last little things to do with our sweet little place on Peaks Island. We left at about 9:00 am lugging the remainder of our stuff. It was already hot and muggy even on the island. The ferry ride in was uneventful - I've taken to sitting indoors near a window that opens to avoid the sun. We thought we needed to kill time until noon when our apartment would be ready but at 9:52 am we got a text that our place in Portland was ready. So we walked up the sloping hill to the West End and were so hot and exhausted at the end that we had to vegetate for a while. It's not hot in the shade but walking carrying luggage even up a gentle hill at 82° with 80% humidity and you turn into a puddle. Once recovered we went to our friend RJs to pick up the remainder of our belongings. The afternoon was spent nesting and we got dinner from the Rosemont Market and Bakery around the corner (gazpacho and our landlord left us bread and blueberries and raspberries!). We need to go out further for other vittles but after it cools. Tomorrow rain is predicted so at least then it will be cooler. One amazing thing is that when we left last year our landlord asked if there was anything they could have done to make the stay better and I mentioned that a beautiful antique chair in the living room needed some attention and the kitchen needed some basic supplies and that a few of the pots and pans were nonstick that was all messed up and they needed replacement. Well ta-da, she listened and made changes - there was a new chair that you can actually sit in in the living room and all the yucky scary pans are gone with a full set of nice stainless steel tools and pots and pans! It's pretty astounding!

Our fridge provided us with a selection of seltzers but when this hot the beer won out. This was a good double IPA from Vermont.

This was a long day of moving but now we are moved and ready for a new chapter.
