ME III: Down East
I'm so saddened that there is so much hate in the world. It is not beneficial on any level so why? Humans are so strange and awful. Since I don't have much energy for anything else I thought I'd talk about something trivial.
Here in Portland, they refer to the area to the north up the coast as Downeast. This area is in fact east of Portland but it seems like it should be called Up East as opposed to Downeast. Downeast Maine encompasses the rural communities of Hancock and Washington counties. It also includes Acadia National Park and that area.
The Down East magazine explains the origin of the term: “When ships sailed from Boston to ports in Maine (which were to the east of Boston), the wind was at their backs, so they were sailing downwind, hence the term ‘Down East.’ Going the reverse direction back to Boston was against the wind; many Mainers still speak of going ‘up to Boston,’ despite the fact that the city lies approximately 50 miles to the south of Maine’s southern border.”
Someday we will make it that far up. Tomorrow we are just going to Boothbay.
Downeast in addition to Acadia there is Cross Island National Wildlife Refuge, Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge, and Petit Manan National Wildlife Refuge.
This year we haven't done very much because we have been pounding on creating the new website for Hesperian (and a new app and a few other things) but I keep telling myself next year at least we won't be building a website.

I wish you all a good night's sleep and hope that we wake up with more peace in the world.
Sending love,
Tawnia
