May 1
We owe a tremendous amount to our ancestors who fought, and some who lost their lives, fighting to limit the workday to not more than 8 hours. It was not uncommon for ordinary workers to be toiling away 10 to 16-hour days in poor working conditions. The Haymarket affair should be something we talk about. Globally, people are still fighting for basic human dignity and rights in the workplace. As humans, there needs to be time to be human, and do more than work - even if your work is meaningful and especially if it's not!
There were protests around the city today to participate in, and the worker cooperatives were closed in solidarity, as was Hesperian. Early, we headed over to Kaiser for my lab work. had a nice breakfast out, went to a protest, went to a gorgeous community garden, had a contractor over to look at converting our house to electricity, and ended the day going out to our favorite Italian restaurant for the best grilled fish around. A full and lovely day. Early, the fog was thick and heavy, but then it cleared, and there were moments of sun.
