Maine Event: Day 9

Well, it was HOT today (86° F) with variable humidity of 75-88%. Tomorrow we have a heat warning that it is going to be 88° F and 100 heat index. The heat is ok if you are on vacation but it's less fun if you have to work. 

We went early to the Wednesday Farmers Market at Deering Park and got a few things including yogurt since this kitchen isn't set up to make it. It's tomato season and "everything" season here. We even got a few Maine peaches which are good not exactly California lusciousness but good. 

A brief update on our Afghan partner - Things are moving forward. Barbara Lee's Congressional Aid is superb and really has her act together. Padilla and Feinstein not so much. From what I can tell Barbara Lee has gotten our request submitted to the DOD. Feinstein, if they can get their act together, is working with the state department. Padilla had us fill out a google form that they closed within 24 hours and have not gotten back to us. Please keep your fingers crossed and your hopes/prayers/wishes on these amazing people. This is so incredibly stressful. 

Humidity is about the same here as it is in the Bay Area but it feels muggier here. As it gets hot this Friday and Saturday in the Bay Area be careful of the mixture of heat and humidity... especially if you don't have access to air conditioning. 

Here is Deering Park, out of view, behind me, is the farmers market. 

This is the Snell Family Farm and we got melons from them. 

I would guess there are 20 farms at the Wednesday market and maybe a few more on Saturday and two are African immigrants all others are white farmers many of them older but not all. One of them is from Fresh Start Farms which is an immigrant and refugee collective farm.  Here is a little more about this community of farmers.

And finally the "Ruby Red" apple. It was quite tart without a good balance of sweet and a little bit astringent like a granny smith. Tomorrow we will eat a no-name variety. I wonder if the apple farmer just makes the names up.
