Maine Event: Day 33

We had a wonderful day with my friend Paula and Nelton. Matt and I woke up to fog and went for a walk to downtown Rockland and found a place open for a cappuccino and a homemade English muffin. Paula and Nelton live just two short blocks from the water and so we walked along the boardwalk. The fog was so thick that it makes you feel like you need to wipe your eyes. It is different than the Bay Area fog in that it doesn't move. It just hangs out. 

We then went to a farm stand (to end all other farm stands) called Beth's where they have every food item under the sun mostly grown by them and farms nearby that grow for them at relatively affordable prices. On the weekend they also have BBQ (and music although that was canceled due to the pandemic). We sat on a park bench and had an amazing strawberry shortcake. The abundance of this farm stand was wild. There were u-pick apples and a hay pyramid to climb and a corn maze. Although it would have been very fun to pick apples we are only on a brief weekend trip and carrying more luggage didn't seem fun. 

Then we went to the town of Union, Maine where they list all the names of their young people who have died in war since the civil war up through the Iraqi war. It's staggering for a town of about 2,000 how many names were listed under each war. It reminded me of the fact that no recruiters or career opportunities were presented in high school other than military recruiters. I think that is the only way out especially if you come from a small town. Where it was sunny and quite warm. 

Then we went to Owl's Head to the state park and took a lovely walk through the forest to a sandy beach with amazing rock formations. It was foggy and very mysterious and wonderful. 

We ended the day by walking through downtown Rockland, which is lined with little art galleries and museums and several cafes and places to eat. It's a very sweet downtown and people were out and about due to a local documentary film festival. As we were walking home the sky turned dark grey and it started raining - and we got drenched again. 

All in all a perfect day. I took so many pictures they will be spread across two days. Tomorrow we will be mostly traveling.

Here is the hay pyramid and the entrance to the corn maze.

To get to the corn maze you get to walk through an apple orchard. Totally magical so many apples on the trees, on the ground, everywhere.
