Maine Event: Day 34

Today was a day of travel and we are tired so this post will be mainly of pictures from yesterday's revels.

My friend Paula told me more about what I thought was the state flag. The white flag with pine tree and star seemed like the state flag because it is on so many houses and Maine is known as the pine cone state (although I think it should be known as the red oak state - what do I know). Turns out that this was the original state flag from 1901 to 1909 then it turned into a blue flag with the state seal which you almost never see. Prior to the early 1900s states didn't have flags and then it became popular. Here is a link to more information about the Maine flag.

This is the new proposed flag and is found on a number of houses in our neighborhood. I have to agree this one is better because the dark blue one with the little insignia is meaningless from a distance.

Ferry terminal today the morning after the rainstorm in Rockland. Gorgeous day. Oh, and the flag under the U.S. flag in the image is the current Maine flag. The smudge in the middle is yellow and unseeable (and probably uninteresting as well).

Multitudes of mushrooms. Many were not photogenic or photographed. Yellow ones, pink ones, white ones, tall ones, short ones every kind imaginable.

Magical green forest. The white background is the ocean but the fog is so thick at this point you can barely see it. After a while, the fog cleared and it was the deepest blue with diamonds.

Climbing on the rocks near the Birch Point Beach State Park in Owls Head. Also Owls Head has a cute tiny airport with direct flights to Boston.

View of the state beach from those rocks - the fall foliage just starting to turn.

This beautiful little meadow was so much more than the photo accurately captured. The fog was swirling in the late afternoon sunlight. The flowers and cattails were catching the light. Pollinators were whirring busily and all was momentarily right in the world.

This is the moon coming up just as the storm last night was getting ready to let go. This is near the ferry terminal in Rockland, Maine. The poor light conditions kind of give this an almost painted quality. So strange that the moon and sun come up over the ocean.

The sunset in Portland encircled us going 180° around the sky. Just amazing.

Full moon. Shining here and there, wherever you are. Tomorrow says the farmer's almanac.
