ME III: still foggy

Today was a foggy day again and marvelously misty with wet streets and sidewalks. I've been thinking about walnuts (easily one of my favorite foods) and learned that 99% of the commercially grown walnuts in the US are grown in California. I know that hickory and butternut trees grow here and wondered about walnut trees. In Paonia where I grew up, it was too cold for English Walnuts but near the house, we had a wonderous Black Walnut that was at least 50ft tall. My father loved black walnuts and we would shell them and make special treats - total pain the the neck but worth it for love. I found this fun site for Maine trees and their friends. Walnuts are commonly grafted onto more disease-resistant roots. In California for example they used the local black walnut roots. However, that practice has mostly stopped because of a specific disease of the graft area that destroys the plants.

While we are thinking about plants on the East Coast there are Pawpaw trees that look like they belong in a tropical forest. Here is an article about them and better pictures from Southern Living.

Anyway, we are doing well. Heading to bed early as we are super tired and tomorrow I will be presenting at the board meeting.

I've always loved the Time & Temperature Building. Where you can go and buy more time and request the temperature to change.
Foggy and misty on the mainland - just after 5pm we went to the store for provisions ahead of the Tropical Storm tomorrow.
