I'm still thinking about the teenage coyote we met the other day. The much-maligned coyotes of San Francisco. The amazing work of Janet “The Coyote Lady” Kessler, teaching San Francisco residents how to get along with the coyote family residents. There are roughly 100 coyotes in San Francisco, organized into around 20 families.

I find them to be engaging, curious, and respectful animals. I love their yipping and they remain a part of the memory of my childhood.

There are 19 subspecies of Canis latrans. Here is a link to a super interesting deep dive into coyotes, and down the page is a great map of the subspecies distribution. Here in the Bay Area, we have Canis latrans ochropus, and where I grew up, there were Canis latrans lestes. Sometimes they move out of their range and come to the coast for a visit, or so I've heard.
