At-home day

Today was super relaxing. We went for an early walk before the many people showed up. Then we came home to the cottage to receive and sign for the new work machine. We each worked on our respective computers, and the computer arrived around 4:30. Dinner and an after-dinner walk, and the day is done. It was foggy in the morning but warm and sunny in the middle.

The wild world around us: There are four different known types of frogs at the Point Reyes Seashore. The Sierran Treefrog (Pseudacris sierra), also known as the Pacific chorus frog, is the most common. The California Red-legged Frog (Rana draytonii) is on the federal threatened species list but has a healthy, good-sized population in ponds, coastal dune drainages, and wetlands. There is also the American Bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus), which is a large, non-native species introduced to California in the 1800s and has spread here. And there is a fourth species - that does not seem to be specified on the national park's website.

We unlearned a thing today and learned a new thing. For years, morning and evening as we entered Bear Valley Trailhead, we heard what we thought were crickets tuning up. In fact, it is the Sierran Treefrog. Have a listen here.

I believe this is the trunk of a Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides). It is a fast-growing, deciduous redwood. Known for being a "living fossil," we only knew of it from the fossil record before being discovered alive in a small area of China in the 1940s.
