Townsend's Warbler

This morning we went into town early to get bread before the line got too long at Brickmaiden Bread. Then we went straight to the trailhead. It was quiet when we got there, but there were lots of people on the way down. Early morning is a great time to look for birds. We got to see the Pileated Woodpecker that we've been hearing for the whole time. What a treat. We also spotted the first Townsend's Warbler of the season. These beautiful birds aren't around in the summer but come back around now. We have a December tradition of going to Washington Square Park in North Beach. We often see Townsend's there in the Ficus trees. In the city, they are definitely winter eye treats.

The wild world around us: Bobcats! The Point Reyes National Seashore is considered one of the best places in the US to observe and photograph wild bobcats. They thrive in the diverse scrub and grasslands. Bobcats in other locations are strictly nocturnal, but here in the park they are often seen hunting during the day. There used to be 12 variations across the US. In 2017, they folded them together, and now there are East and West varieties. Here is more information
