Maine Event: Day 69

It was a truly brisk day with a high of 55° and a low of 34°. That is cool enough that it brings apples to your cheeks and makes you smile involuntarily. The sun is still warm and it feels nice when you exit the shadows and step into the light.

We stayed home and did chores starting to wrap up our wonderful stay here. We also cooked one of my homework recipes – garbanzo beans with large pieces of celery root, whole carrots, a halved fennel bulb, and big 4-5 inch chunks of leeks, an onion, bay leaf, and also a bouquet garni made with the green end of leeks containing 8 sprigs flat-leaf parsley and 8 sprigs of thyme. We cooked the vegetables for 20-30 mins and fished them out and then finished the garbanzos. The salad dressing was chopped skinned/seeded tomatoes with vinegar, olive oil, chives, garlic, parsley, and basil. When everything is cold chop up the vegetables. We ate it on a bed of mixed salad greens with the chopped vegetable, garbanzo beans doused with the tomato vinaigrette. It was another winner! YUM.

We are at the beginning stages of starting to pack up and trying to eat down all the food. The news of the giant storm hitting the Bay Area and much of the West Coast is as dramatic in the newspapers as the story of the 6 million acres that have burned across the West this year. My weather app shows that it rained 4 inches today in SF!!!! (and today isn't over yet).

I was sent this wonderful article. Enjoy. I recommend listening to the poem read aloud which you can find at the bottom of the linked page.

We discovered this hidden tunnel near a walk we commonly go on. So we had to explore to find the other end.

tunnel of stone work that is overgrown

Part of the tunnel on this end was compromised by the freeway off-ramp. A fence around the front seems a futile defense. It seemed like an old railway tunnel and it goes right down to the working waterfront that is now filled with shipping containers. This is all we could find out.
