ME II: quiet day
Today we kind of melted and had a domestic kind of day. Early we went to the Portland Farmers' Market in Deering Park. I'm getting to know the farmers and it's so fun to see them all a second year. It was super busy and the lines were long even though we got there at about 8am. I guess the mixture of a long weekend and the beauty of both summer and fall produce. Anyway, I had a good conversation with Emily the Oyster lady. I learned that the kind of oyster she grows is the Eastern oyster or Atlantic oyster which used to be wild and was over-harvested. Now they grow their own seed in Maine and they all grow the same kind of oyster. These are Crassostreaea virginica as are virtually all of the oysters all along the Atlantic coast - South America and North. I love that Emily grows them, harvests them and drives them to the farmers' market, and sells them. It's completely her show. On the West Coast, most of our oysters are Magallana gigas and Kumamoto's (a favorite) is Magallana sikamea (previously considered a subspecies of M. gigas).
Other than that we cleaned up a bit and cooked a bit. We will probably do more of that tomorrow. We are both feeling a little run down and are taking it easy. Grateful we have an extra day. We did go on a walk to learn more about how to tell the different maples apart. We are expecting rain on Monday and Tuesday and we might have a visitor on Monday!
