ME II: 6 days left
Totally wonderfully beautiful day! Blue skies, crystal air, warm sun, breezy, cool enough to make your cheeks glow. The low today was 41° and the high was 67° the breeziness made it feel cooler. The next few days will dip into the 30s on the low end. We shut down our post office box today and now all the mail will start to go the other direction. For two years now there has been massive construction behind the main USPS office. I was thinking it was an expansion of their building on Congress as it blocks their entrance and takes up their parking lot. However, I discovered today that it is the future tallest building in Portland at 18 floors with 263 market rate rentals with 10% will be reserved as "workforce" housing with income tied to 100% of Portland's median income. The median income is $61,695 for households and $35,408 for individuals.
It is so strange to be leaving so soon this trip went by so quickly and work has been so intense. On the weekend we will start the great shutting down of all the various things around the house and cleaning.
The second episode for today of Maine by the Mile is about free camping near Katahdin. Mount Katahdin is the highest mountain in Maine at 5,269 feet. Katahdin means Great Mountain in Abenaki in the dialect of Penobscot. Abenaki is an endangered Algonquian language from this region and up through Quebec.
