ME III: Regulation

I've been talking and thinking about regulation. It is obvious to me that there is a lot more room for small non-professional people to start businesses in Maine. There are more reasons than regulations for that, of course. The general economy has more room at the table and the cost of starting a business is much lower. That said, most milk you can buy is unpasteurized, there are many different brands of local farms that make and sell yogurt or meat in all the grocery stores. This is not the case in California and the one unpasteurized milk producer is always in litigation with the regulators. It's clear that small independent makers and farmers are supported by the rules here more than in California.

Lack of regulation also has a negative side as well. For example, the Western Prom is lovely to view the Fore River and the sunset, but there can be a horrible smell of processed meat (probably animal food) wafting up making one's stomach churn. Keep in mind that this is the area of the most expensive houses those in the range of 4-6M. Also, the airport takes off and lands directly across the river and there are thousands of complaints from people in South Portland. When they aren't flying directly over South Portland they are coming directly over the Western Prom. Both sides of low regulation good and bad are present. I'm happy that I'm a few blocks away and the air is better and the airplanes don't wake me up.

Speaking of AIR...it's clean here again and it was a wonderfully crisp day with cool shadows and warm sun. You can smell the first scent of fall leaves. Such a comforting smell to me.
