Fog and...Ethio-jazz

Today was an in-office day, and it was magnificent weather in Oakland, low 70s (hotter inside) with little breezes. My workmate and I had a lunch conversation about Ethiopian Jazz and other music from Ethiopia. Here are a couple of samples.

First music from Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou - The Homeless Wanderer. Here is information about her amazing life and work. She is not really strictly Ethio-jazz, but fits nicely. I learned about her from the Guardian when she passed away. I'm still a little awe-struck.

Second music from Mulatu Astatke - Tezeta (Nostalgia). Here is more about him and his amazing life and work. He is more traditional Ethio-jazz.

Ethio-jazz is a blend of traditional Ethiopian music and jazz, combining the pentatonic scale-based melodies of Amharic music with the 12-tone scale and instrumentation of Western music. This blend is particularly notable in the use of one of the main pentatonic scales used in Ethiopia, known as Ambassel.
