SF Botanical Garden

Today we got up early, and I went down to the farmer's market for a few things. Then we had an adventure day and took public transportation out to the botanical garden. It's such a magical place, and with everything going on, it was really good to lower the temperature and look at plants and birds. It did mean I missed the 4pm solidarity protest.

Magnolia campbellii trees grow to great size and, at one time, dominated the forest canopies of the Himalayan foothills. They were over-harvested for wood during the 17th to 19th centuries to create shipping crates for the tea industry.
Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia Glyptostroboides). It loses its leaves in winter! We learned about this years ago from a woman on the Bear Valley Trail who found one of these there, and we had a memorable conversation about the rapturous song of the Swainson's Thrush.
Quercus Cerris may be the sacred oak of Zeus of Dodonia
